Effective lifestyle goals

Goal setting is a proven way of increasing the chances of achieving your desired goals. The key here is setting goals using tried and trusted techniques that have been shown to help people succeed in achieving things that they value.


Any goals you set, whether they are performance goals to follow a healthy diet or learning goals to understand your DMO, should be SMART

  • S · specific and stretching. Research shows that setting specific goals leads to higher performance than setting vague goals. Research also shows that the more challenging a goal, the more effort you put in and the greater your performance
  • M · measurable. You must to be able to measure progress towards your goals and know when you have achieved them.
  • A · achievable. You must believe that you can achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
  • R · relevant and rewarding. Your goals should be things that you value and want to achieve because doing so would be rewarding.
  • T · time-bound. Every goal must have a deadline!

Here are some examples:

  • I will smoke one less cigarette every day for the next week.
  • I will eat a balanced breakfast every day of the week for the next two weeks.
  • I will run for 20 mins every three days for the next month.

If-then plans

If-then plans in the format “If I am offered a sugary drink, then I will ask for a glass of water instead” are useful additions to SMART goals, as they can help you overcome obstacles to achieving your goals, stay focused and take action in appropriate situations.

If-then plans, like SMART goals, have also been proven to help people successfully achieve their goals.

Here are some examples:

  • If I feel like smoking, I will eat a piece of fruit instead.
  • If I feel like eating something sweet, I will chew some sugar free gum instead.
  • If it’s a sunny day, I will walk to work.
